Thomas lost his chance to be the team's fourth different starting quarterback of the season due mainly to a pitiful practice performance on Wednesday.

Now it's back to third string Ryan Lindley, Arians confirmed, amid news Friday that Drew Stanton underwent arthroscopic surgery earlier this week on his injured right knee, and team doctors discovered he has been dealing with an infection that led to massive swelling in the knee.

Arians said his decision to turn back to Lindley had nothing to do with Stanton's status.

"We will start Ryan Lindley in the ballgame strictly because of the evaluation process of during the week he's going to give us a better chance of winning this game," Arians said. "Like I've said earlier, Logan's going to be a hell of a player one of these days, but right now he's not ready."

Asked what he saw in practice from Thomas on Wednesday to make the switch a day later to Lindley, Arians said: "The ball wasn't in the spots it needed to be. He was throwing it well, but not to the right guys. He just hasn't had enough reps to go against this defense, which is one of the best five defenses in the National Football League."

Then Arians admitted he might have made a mistake.

"It was probably a poor decision on my part to early announce it, but it is what it is and we're going to do what we need to do to win the football game and that's to start Ryan. I was hoping (Thomas) could handle it, but it's not the time right now."

Lindley was 18 of 44 for 216 yards with no touchdowns and an interception last Sunday night in a 35 6 loss at home to the Seahawks, his first start since 2012. His performance left Cardinals fans scratching their heads, but Arians backed Lindley once again on Friday, saying the rout can't be pinned on the quarterback's shoulders.
